Hanging baskets are inexpensive and plentiful. This quick upcycle project takes old baskets and turns them into fun and festive light balls for your outdoor space. With few materials and just a bit of time you will have something to brighten up your evenings outdoors.
- 2 hanging baskets, matching diameter
- Spray paint (optional)
- 4-6 zip ties
- Mini lights, indoor/outdoor
- Twist ties
- Extension cord
Begin by removing the chains from both baskets. Retain the chains for later use. Clean baskets as necessary and paint if desired.
Press the two baskets together at the rims and secure them together with zip ties. You will need at least 4.
Starting with the plug end of the cord at the top of the ball, secure the first light to the top of the ball with a twist tie. Twist several times to ensure a tight attachment.
Begin wrapping the lights around the ball, attaching at each possible basket wire with twist ties. How far you space the lights will depend on how many lights you want to have on the finished ball. When you have finished wrapping the lights horizontally, secure on the bottom. Then begin wrapping the ball vertically to fill in any spaces. Be sure to distribute the lights evenly around the ball. Attach the last light with a twist tie to finish the wrapping process.
Reattach one of the chains to the top/center of the light ball. Wrap the chain around the light cord. Install a hook to hang the light ball using the chain to bear the weight. Plug the lights into an extension cord. (Source: Diynetwork/Image Credit: Sam Henderson)
